Keeping in line with the spirit of Interrail, train travel in Germany is simple and relaxed, you can just hop on and off most of the local and regional trains.
But to give you peace of mind, we recommend that you make sure you understand everything there is to know about seat reservations and supplements on trains in Germany before you travel.

We would recommend reservations, if you are intending to use any of the following trains in Germany:

International Trains: Reservations are required on the Thalys International high-speed trains.

Night Trains: Reservations are required on the NightJet and Euronight (EN) night services.
Reservations are not required for:
The following trains in Germany do not need you to make a reservation:
- Regional Trains: The Regional trains Interregio-Express (IRE), Regional-Express (RE) and Regionalbahn (RB) not not require reservations to be made.
- S-Bahn: These commuter trains do not require reservations to be made.
